Great Western Railways small Prairie No 4566
Here at Kidderminster town on the Severn Valley
Railway earlier last year
The Great Western Railway (GWR) 4500 Class or
Small Prairie is a class of 2-6-2T steam locomotives.
They were designed as small mixed traffic branch
locomotives, mainly used on branch lines. The design
was based on the earlier 4400 Class, but with larger
driving wheels and altered wheel spacing. This gave
them extra speed - capable of 60 mph in service.
Three of the class still exist, two of them survivors from
Woodham Brothers scrapyard in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan,
South Wales. All of them have run in preservation.

The sides of the oil bath are indeed the frames and
leather cup seals were used when these were first
built which were prone to heavier leakage as the
seal broke down . Later modern materials such as
neoprene have done much to reduce this difficulty.

Great Western Railways Large Prairie 4160
Seen here at Minehead some three years ago now
I keep finding these odd ones tucked away

We are well blessed with having the Bahamas loco
society at Ingrow
They are the custodians for the National Trust of
this the oldest locomotive to run on the main line
GWR Large Prairie 4160
My visits to the West Somerset are always a highlight
of the train spotting year
Here large prairie 4160 moves off shed for duty
at Minehead.
Austerity 90733 and City of Wells at Haworth
As well as Wells Austerity 90733 came back into
full service this year
Good to see them running together on the busy
summer days
That summer seems a long time ago on a cold
wintry day such as today

Newly out shopped she created much interest
After thirty years it was great to see her back

GWR 'King George V' The drivers place
It doesn't seem like much of a view
Named after the monarch on the throne
when the engine was built
Plenty for the driver and fireman to keep an eye on

Woody Bay on the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway
I was surprised how commodious the
brake/goods van was. Of course it was
a commercial working railway and
carried much goods as well as heavy
passenger traffic in the summer
These were on display at Woody Bay
at that time
The first of the original carriages was on display too
Now of course thanks to the work of
the volunteers a full rake of three are
fully restored. My team tried them out
So much credit to this railways it has grown steadily
year on year and we visit every year on our annual
holiday in Devon
Lynton and Barnstaple some more of that first visit.

A busy Autumnal day at Ramsbottom on the East Lancashire Railway
Once again the Standard Class 4 tank is in charge
