K&WVR Locomotive Allocation for Flying Scotsman Week

Locomotive Allocation for Flying Scotsman Week

by news@kwvr
After all the planning, hours of midnight oil burning and the odd heart flutter, the long awaited arrival of 'Flying Scotsman' is only a few hours away.
With 2 steam locomotives and the diesel multiple unit operating all day over the weekend plus 3 locomotives in steam from Monday right through to the following Sunday, these are exciting times indeed. 60103 arrives on Wednesday 29th March and the first excursion from Oxenhope for many years takes place on Friday, when Flying Scotsman leaves Oxenhope at 08.30 for Carlisle.

Passenger Train Banking

Under normal operating conditions the banking of passenger trains by a steam locomotive is not permitted. In the past when passenger services have been top and tailed by a steam engine the "banking" engine is towed and gives no assistance. As most will know, Flying Scotsman is not an ideal engine for a twisting 5 mile branchline with severe gradients on tight curves and tight turnouts.
Some have asked questions about the easing of the branch axle loading to allow 'Scotsman' to operate on the line. 60103 exceeds the permitted axle load for the KWVR and is not permitted to pass over a curve of less than 6 chains radius. Its operation has been authorised subject to a number of special restrictions, in particular, 60103 will be limited to 20 mph and must not slip when passing over 4 of our bridges as slipping may damage the bridges in question.
To minimise the risk of slipping the train, which will consist of 8 coaches (including 2 Pullman coaches), will be banked in the rear by our own locomotive and should result in some spectacular departures from Keighley.
Working hard, 90733 gives rear assistance , non-stop through Ingrow. Banking trial 4th February, 90733 gives rear assistance non-stop through Ingrow.

Lineside Photography

On the 31st March for the departure of the railtour and for the normal steam hauled services on the 1st & 2nd April, photographers wishing to photograph from the lineside must carry a valid KWVR Photo Permit AND their KWVR membership card.
During 60103's week of operation on the branch, 3rd - 9th April only those carrying their Annual Photo Permit, Flying Scotsman letter of authorisation AND wearing the special Flying Scotsman Hi-Viz vest will be allowed trackside.
Normal access restrictions as detailed in the Photographer's Personal Safety Handbook will apply but there will be strict policing of the lineside during the period 31st March - 9th April and anyone NOT carrying ALL the necessary documentation will be evicted from the Railway's land.
Photo-permit_2
In addition we ask in particular that all permit-holders and members of the public respect our land boundaries and do not trespass on any private land.   If you do have permission from land owners to take photographs from their land, then we would recommend having written authority from them with you to avoid being challenged during the event.
We ask that you assist us during the event by alerting a member of Railway staff or, once you are in a position of safety, by calling the office on 01535 645214 if you see anyone not wearing the special clothing and/or trespassing on private land.

K&WVR Locomotive Roster for Weekend 25th & 26th March 2017

Locomotive Roster for Weekend 25th & 26th March 2017

by news@kwvr
USATC S160 returned to action last weekend and will continue this weekend at the head of the Saturday and Sunday steam service.
However it is Mother's Day this Sunday so it is a steam only Sunday with MR 4F 0-6-0 43924 on the second steam working that will including our 2 Pullman coaches serving Afternoon Tea to the mother's who have been fortunate enough for their "little ones" to have reserved their places on their special day. The photograph above shows the same locomotive on the Mother's Day train in brilliant blue skies in 2016, fingers crossed that the same weather is enjoyed this year.
The Saturday diesel service will be in the hands of railbus M79964.
Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

K&WVR Locomotive Roster for Weekend 18th & 19th March 2017

Locomotive Roster for Weekend 18th & 19th March 2017

by news@kwvr
BR B1 4-6-0 61264 is leaving the Railway this week to return 'Home' and so it is back to the home fleet to provide motive power at the weekend. Having seen little use since the Santa Steam Specials, USATC S160 2-8-0 re-enters the fray this weekend at the head of the Saturday and Sunday steam service.
The diesel railbus M79964 provides the diesel service and is a good way to see the branch, not seen from our locomotive hauled stock.
Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

There were a very popular engine and as many

A reliable workhorse in the preserved sector now

Ingrow good passing Haworth

A good sight, maybe how it used to be

Don't think they would have spared a B1 for such
a duty though.

The K&WVR's class 4's

We have two class fours at Haworth 80002T and
75078

80002T is in the exhibition hall at Oxenhope at

Locomotive Roster for Weekend 11th & 12th March 2017

by news@kwvr
Those that attended the Gala last weekend witnessed an exceptional 3 days of steam action with the final count of 3 visiting locomotives in the shape of B1 4-6-0 61264, 'Crab' 2-6-0 13065 and our own Black 5 4-6-0 45212. Sadly the forth engine, Black 5 45407 did not pass its mainline test run in time to make it for the event.
45212 has departed the Railway back to Bury via our mainline connection and 13065 has left us for the same destination by road. However we are delighted that the B1 is still with us and will be at the head of the steam services this weekend before returning to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway next week, giving everyone another chance to once again ride behind and photograph this superb locomotive.
The diesel passenger service will once again be with the trusty diesel railbus, M79964.
Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

BR Standard class 4 tank 80002

On one of its last outings, now joined the que for
overhaul

Another Yank USA S100 switcher

Another American contribution during WW2 was
the USA S100 switcher or as we would say Shunter

Superb little engines which worked in Southampton
docks for many years after WW2 ended

No 63 is seen here at Embsay on the Embsay Bolton
Abbey Railway

Robust little engines that helped not only to win
the war but the peace also

Class 37 Diesel electric locomotives

One for the diesel fans.

The class 37 introduced in the 1960's were powerful
locomotives for both passenger and goods work

Fitted with an English Electric 1750 HP diesel
engine driving a generator which powered the
traction motors on the bogies. The engines
were probably the zenith of English Electrics
production being turbocharged and inter-cooled.
10 inch bore and 12 inch stroke in a Vee 12
formation.

Great Western Railway 'Raveningham Hall'

On this wet dreary Sunday I thought I would remind
myself of those summer days of last year

Here Raveningham Hall stands ready for the next
days duty at Minehead on the West Somerset Railway

Gresley coach set

This was luxury 1920/30 style

There was a world of difference between
those that had and those that didn't

Upper class and Middle class traveled
comfort.

Thankfully the depression and WW2
made many social changes.

Riddles WD and the USA S160 bask in the late winter sun

Our two wartime engines, the WD 90733

and the Yank S160 5820

Both these classes of engines did sterling work in
WW2. Initially here in Britain and after the D Day
invasion they went over to Europe to support the
armies as they moved towards Germany and final
peace

The USA S160's were fine engines and many
continued work after the peace, running on many
European railways. Replacing stock bombed and
damaged through other means. I know French
Engine-men did all they could to slow the axis
attempts to reinforce occupation forces fighting
the Allies in the work of freeing Europe to the
point of damaging/sabotaging their own engines.
I believe a five centime piece nicely blocked
the oil cups on various bearings whilst giving
the impression of being full the passing glance

Its Gala weekend at the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway

A fine line up yesterday as the B1 was lit up

I and Mike Higgins were working at the yard yesterday
on parts for the class 2 restoration and Mike got these
superb pictures

Come along today tomorrow and Sunday and see
all the engines running. Two black fives are
expected to arrive today so a good weekend
for all the enthusiasts.

Come along and see, you wont be disappointed

K&WVR lineup for the Winter Steam Gala

2017 Winter Steam Gala Update

by news@kwvr
kwvr_steamgalaad130x188mm-1
With only a few days to go, we are delighted to confirm the line up for this weekend's Winter Steam Gala. As posted earlier 13065 arrived last week and the image below shows our other visitor, 61264, on Haworth shed having arrived on the Railway at Keighley in the hours of darkness.
61264-13065-170228-kp
So the line up consists of:
  • BR (LNER) B1 4-6-0 61264 (Courtesy of the Thompson B1 Locomotive Trust)
  • LMS 'Crab' 2-6-0 13065 (Courtesy of the East Lancashire Railway)
  • BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0 75078
  • WD 2-8-0 90733
  • Midland 4F 0-6-0 43924
  • USATC S160 2-8-0 “Big Jim” No.5820
  • LNWR 0-6-2 ‘Coal Tank’ 1054 (Courtesy of Bahamas Loco Society)
  • Taff Vale Railway O2 0-6-2T 85
  • Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0T 1704 ‘Nunlow (Courtesy of Bahamas Loco Society)
  • Grafton Steam Crane will be in steam and operating in Oakworth Yard
… as well as a range of different coaching stock and goods vehicles.
On Sunday Mary and Ann, our two K class Pullmans built in 1930 as a pair for the Southern Railway Bournemouth Bell service will be in use. A supplement for travel is required for these vehicles at £5 each. Throughout the morning the supplement entitles you to complimentary ‘Coffee & Croissant’ and during the afternoon a traditional  ‘English Cream Tea’ – it’s well worth a fiver!
The situation with the two 'Black 5s', 45212 and 45407 remains fluid. They are due mainline certification this week and if that is forthcoming they should arrive on the Railway Friday evening by our connection at Keighley. This, of course precludes their participation on Friday, but will, if they do arrive, operate Saturday and Sunday requiring an amendment to the working timetables as previously published.
As with all our Galas we publish the working timetables for the various workings. The up-to-date version (01/03/17) can be viewed by downloading the 2017 Winter Steam Gala Working Timetable PDF. It is important to note that these timetables take account that 45212 and 45407 MAY be attending and reflect that the situation remains fluid.
The public timetables can be viewed HERE >>

Guided tours of the Haworth Locomotive Works

Once again we will be running our unique tour behind the scenes in our engine shed and workshop at Haworth, the tours being led by our experienced and knowledgeable volunteer tour guides. The tours are organised to raise funds to restore the Ivatt 2-6-2T 41241 and although the tours are free, we do ask our guests to consider making a Gift Aided donation, usually in the region of £5 to the KWVR Charity (no 1136853).
Tour times will connect with trains from Keighley arriving at Haworth where you will meet your guide at Haworth Station for your 45/60 minute tour.
