Taff Vale Railway 0-6-2T no. 85 has given stalwart service, operating every weekend of the January timetable and will once again be in action on a 4 coach service this weekend.

DRB M79964 which will once again operate the diesel turns throughout the weekend.
Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

Taff Vale No 85 another of we old codgers

I have had the pleasure of a close relationship of
late with the Taffy tank


A pleasure to help David Coates the leading fitter 
on this engines restoration along with Derick Ostick


As the new slide valves are wearing in there is now
a distinct four beats to the exhaust


There is much pleasure in bringing these relics back
to life to give children and young people a living 
history lesson in how it used to be

will know of my association with the Taff Vale 
Railway

The London and North Western Railways Coal Tank 1054

An even older sole survivor is the LNWR Coal Tank


I believe it got its name form the duties it was 
designed to perfom, hauling heave coal trains 
around the midlands and to and from the capital


Now in the trust of the Bahamas Locomotive Society


Based at Ingrow it can often be seen on Sunday 
vintage carriage trains on the K&WVR


yet another piece of our industrial heritage and 
industry


The Vintage carriage trust are to be commended
also for the work of preserving historic carriages

Robert Riddles Austerity class 2-8-0 90733 a study

Here a little photographic study of the WW2 War 
Department engine 90733


880 plus were built in preparation for the invasion
of Europe 


I believe three of the 2-10-0's survived but only
the one 2-8-0 


Being the only one the engine often bears the name
plate REMEMBRANCE


The only one of the 800 plus to survive thanks
to the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway


A lovely engine and one which harks back to times
of conflict past

BR Standard class 4 75078

Hopefully we shall soon see 75078 back in steam

Taff Vale No 85 from the footplate

I had the pleasure of a footplate ride on Taff Vale 85
Yesterday (Saturday)

The engine is still in the process of running new
slide valves in


Yesterday was a cold (freezing) day so water and 
coal usage was going to be higher than normal


This a great little engine and I am very grateful to
John Reddyhoff the CME of the K&WVR who 
was driving and his fireman Andy


Slight delays collecting our train of five 167 tonnes
due to ice on the points 


Excellent run down to Keighley

uphill

No85 'The Taff Vale tank engine'

TVR 02 No 85 had an outing on the KW&VR
this weekend

Needs some hard running to bed the new slide 
valves in 


Nick is always attentive to the needs of his charges


It is a stiff pull up the bank out of Keighley a 1:56 
gradient.

Shipley Great Northern

Here some more views of the Great Northern Railway
at Shiply. 
My thanks to the MLS Collection

I well remember some times on the Ilkley train
out of Forster Sq, being back shunted onto the GN
line in front of Shipley GN from the Midland station
if the line through and across to Baildon and Ilkley 
was congested. Choir trips to Ilkley Lido were a 
summer treat through my latter childhood. 


Again the workhorse of the Great Northern alps
route was the Ivatt N1. 
Here you see some of the 
platform has been lifted prior to the total closure
of the Great Northern line to Thackley, Idle,
Eccleshill and on to Laisterdyke where it 
joined the main line near Quarry Gap

Great Northern Railway leaving Keighley

This was where the GREAT NORTHERN line 
parted company with the MIDLAND Worth Valley 
line to approach its own station of Ingrow East


It was quite a slog for the northern men as the pull
up out of the goods yard was even steeper than the 
pull up from Keighley station which the passenger
trains took. Joint running powers allowed this from
 the shared platforms at Keighley. The goods yard 
was of course separate and trains parted company
with the joint midland line just before Park Wood
 Tunnel to run down and under the midland line just
after the Globe pub on Park Rd. The remains of the
cutting can still be seen there.

34092 'City of Wells' and 90733 Austerity 2-8-0

After a very long overhaul in Haworth sheds 'City of Wells'
in company with Riddles Austerity 90733


Having left Haworth we wonder if she will ever return


It has to be said a lot of resource was given to this engine


Ahhh well never mind we are getting Flying Scotsman
in the spring

Llangollen Railway 08 Diesel shunter

On my last visit of the autumn to the Llangollen
the only movements were empty stock


However it does show how useful the 08 shunters
are.


Dating from an LMS design of the 1930's

Hopefully a soon to be repeated scene.


Work is now progressing well on the Ivatt tank

The 0-6-2 wheel arrangement seemed to suit engines
that were expected to haul heavy loaded coal trains


here the LNWR coal tank on more glamorous duty
