GNR (LNER) and L&Y Express locomotives

Originally designed and built by the GNR the A1
Pacific's were the fastest

Hughes on the L&Y designed heavy fast passenger
locomotives for the cross country routes

Serving both east and west coast

L&Y loco's could be seen from Morecombe to
Cleethorpes

The Atlantic design played and important part
just as it did with the GNR

Those ever tempting railway posters

Meant for the working class
and that much loves wakes week

L&Y 4 6 0 Heavy Passenger express

Both Southport and Blackpool along with Morecombe
were served by the big 4 6 0 heavy locomotives
of the L&Y on excursion work to the coast

Blackpool was for the rest of us

But many found it to be the
the much needed break

Southport was pretty swish

The Lancs and Yorks served the industrial areas
in many and varied ways

The American connection

Taken from the American wheel arrangement 4 4 2
Commonly known as the Atlantic

They must have been a thrilling ride in those early
days just after the races to the North

I have it they were a lively ride on the footplate

Nigel Gresly's A4 class

The streaks were indeed a product of my county's
industrial might

A few more Posters

The A4s were the very image
of speed in the 1930's

I am always pleased to see my county shown in
its true light. Yes there were many very heavily
industrialised areas but 90% of the county
is rural

GNR Windhill Junction

This old picture shows Windhill Junction looking
east. The BR standard on the Leeds line coasts
down to Shipley Station, the GNR line is to the
right and steep gradient up to Thackley can
be seen

Great Central Railway Spinner

GCR Class 13 4-2-2 No. 967 (LNER X4).
The class 13 single was the only true Pollitt engine
for passenger work. Most of the other engines were developments ...

Built at Gorton 1900 1909

Harry Pollitt (1864–?) was Locomotive Engineer of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway from 1894–1897 and its successor, the Great Central Railway, from 1897-1900. He was Robinsons immediate predecessor

My thanks to Wikepedia for the above

Ivatt J5 0 6 0 freight locomotive

One for American memories

Brooklyn terminus, a very atmospheric photo

I never knew the system across the Brooklyn bridge
was so complex. This would have been taken not
long after the bridges completion
