Little Engines Gala – Visiting Engine

With only nine weeks to go until our brand new "Little Engines Gala" we are delighted to announce our first visiting locomotive, 'Austerity' 0-6-0ST 71515 'Mech Navvies Ltd.' courtesy of the Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway (PBR). This type of engine featured in the early days of the KWVR with two examples of the class operational during the early years, Longmoor Military Railway no. 118 'Brussels', now resident in Oxenhope Exhibition Shed and 'Fred', an ex-National Coal Board engine which left the Railway many years ago.

71515 was commissioned by the War Department in 1945 from Robert Stevenson and Hawthorns as WD71515, but, with WW2 drawing to a close, was quickly put to work at the Swalwell Disposal Point in what was then County Durham, the modern day Tyne & Wear. At the time, the opencast disposal point was worked by Mechanical Navvies Limited, and it is in that company’s livery that the loco now appears.

It was taken into preservation by 1974 to the East Somerset Railway, where shortly after arrival she was liveried in BR black with the BR number 68005 in line with the J94 locomotives that ran on the national railway system, although 71515 never ran in BR service.

By 1995 71515 ran at the Bolton and Embsay Railway, still in BR black and where she was nicknamed ‘The Mog’. Although overhauled in 2004, a burst boiler tube two years later put paid to her active service and was laid aside.

Three years later, following interest shown by a PBR member, 71515 was purchased in August 2009, and in the following month, taken to the Flour Mill works in the Forest of Dean for repair, being repainted into Mech Navvies livery in the process. Arriving at the PBR in April 2010, the engine has worked the majority of services scheduled for steam haulage since.

Locomotive Roster for Weekend 6th & 7th May 2017

It has been a busy period for our volunteers over the last month or so, with hardly a respite since the 31st March and throughout April . So it is probably with some relief that we have the next two weekends of "normal" running with no special trains and the standard Green timetable on Saturday and Blue timetable on Sunday.

The mainstay of this weekend's steam service will be WD 2-8-0 90733, the first steam service on Saturday departing Oxenhope at 11.00 for 5 round trips to Keighley. On Sunday 90733 will be joined on Sunday by BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0 75078 with passenger services starting at 10.15

The Saturday diesel turn will have our Class 101 Diesel Multiple Unit running the service with the first train leaving Oxenhope at 09.00.

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

Due to engineering works next week there will be no mid-week diesel railcar service on the 10th May.

No sooner has Easter passed and another holiday period starts with a 3 day full 2 train service Saturday - Monday. The weekend starts with a modified Green timetable on Saturday with a full line all day mainline diesel hauled service commencing at 09.00. This service, the first of our mainline diesel hauled days, will be in the hands of BR English Electric Class 37 locomotive 37 075. At the head of the steam hauled passenger train will be WD 2-8-0 90733.

On Sunday the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race passes up the Valley and we are operating a special all steam timetable starting at 09.30, continuing throughout the day. 90733 will be joined by BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0 75078 for the Sunday services and on Monday when the Blue timetable will operate.
