1842 L&BR No2 Queen Adelaide’s saloon at the NRM

Queen Adelaide was Queen consort to William 1V

The chassis for the coach was built by the London
and Birmingham Railway at it's Euston Works the
coach was custom built in London

It is the oldest preserved railway coach in Europe
fitted for a Queen it also had fold down beds for
night travel. In the 1840's only some 25 years
after Waterloo this must have been an incredible
progress to move at speeds up to 40mph in such luxury.
William IV was of course Uncle to Queen Victoria
who succeeded him and reigned over the amazing
progress in rail travel
