Leeds Central Station

This series of pictures I discovered on the net
reminds us if the number of stations in Leeds

I well remember Leeds central as if you wet to
Leeds from Bradford via Pudsey then your
terminus in Leeds was Central

A little to the North of Wellington St which was
the normal terminus for trains from Bradford

It was one of the first to close and be demolished

A high level station, some remnants still remain
I wonder for how long

Posters were railways art

The Peak district has been brought
to mind as we celebrate the setting
up of the National Parks

The Peak District National Park
came about by people power, who
demanded access to the countryside
as of right rather than privilege.
The mass trespass on Kinder
Scout made the government
take the rights of you and
me seriously

This if course opened areas up
to public access previously denied
and in the days before mass car
travel the railways were to
lead the way in getting
people out towns
and cities

Two of my favourites from the NRM collection

The Royal Scots on goods duty

And the compounds on passenger service.

The British Railways design team

CS Cocks of course not to be confused with
ES Cox who was Chief electrical engineer
with the Southern

CS Cocks was born in Gorton in 1897. Cocks had been employed in the drawing office at Gorton (former GCR) until 1927 when he moved to Doncaster. He did not know Bulleid during his LNER days and transferred to the Southern Railway in 1937 where he had to interpret his chief's unusual wishes, especially those relating to the Leader class. In 1949 he transferred to Derby as chief draughtsman in succession to Coleman. He was a member of the design team for the British Railways Standard locomotives, and was a member of the committee which organized the 1948 interchange trials. Langridge  notes that he had been informed by Cocks that Gresley would sit at a draughtsman's board discussing something, quite oblivious of the passing of the 'Knocking-off' time; he was one of the very few designing CMEs. Langridge notes that Cocks was far less orderly than Clayton and was sometimes an impatient man.

A superb design 75029 on the North Yorks Moors Railway

Much of the actual design work of the standards
was down to CS Cocks who was chief draughtsman
at Derby.

Of course Robin Riddles (himself an ex Chief Draughtsman)
had over all control and stated the specifications required.
However the designs of the standards was very much a
team effort. Indeed it was largely Riddles who as Chief
Draughtsman under Stanier was responsible
for the design of the Duchesses.

So we can see a clear train of progression in the
culmination of the BR team and the superb job
they did. Of course it was Preservationists who
completed the research and development
of the Duke of Gloucester and the
Caprotti valve gear

The BR Standard 4 The Green Knight.
Bought in tandem with 9F Black Prince
by David Shepherd. He tells us we owe much
the upland elephant the sale of whose picture
financed the purchase of the two locomotives
I think a thank you to David is also inline
as it was his artistic talent which painted
the upland elephant
