Much of the actual design work of the standards
was down to CS Cocks who was chief draughtsman
at Derby.
Of course Robin Riddles (himself an ex Chief Draughtsman)
had over all control and stated the specifications required.
However the designs of the standards was very much a
team effort. Indeed it was largely Riddles who as Chief
Draughtsman under Stanier was responsible
for the design of the Duchesses.
So we can see a clear train of progression in the
culmination of the BR team and the superb job
they did. Of course it was Preservationists who
completed the research and development
of the Duke of Gloucester and the
Caprotti valve gear
