From the re-opening in June 1968 until 1971 the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway had shown a steady rise in passenger numbers when EMI chose the KWVR as the railway line of the fictitious GNSR immortalised in Edith Nesbit's book 'The Railway Children' and instantly raised the profile of this sleepy West Yorkshire branchline. So successful was the publicity that the film generated, the Society directors of the day had to decide to increase the capacity of the line to cope with the number of passengers wishing to travel on The Railway Children's railway by building a passing loop, now known as Damems Junction.
Whilst the story of the film and the building of the loop are stories in their own right, the film is also responsible for a humble Great Western Pannier tank, number 5775, being shot to fame. When hauling the Old Gentleman’s saloon, it became affectionately immortalised by many, when famously 'Bobby', played by Jenny Agutter, successfully attracted the driver’s attention to a landslip blocking the line with 5775 skidding to a halt as 'Bobby' fell to the ground in fear.
Sadly 5775 has not worked on the Railway for some time and is currently on display in Oxenhope Exhibition Shed in its fictitious GNSR livery. However to mark the importance that 5775 played in the history and success of the KWVR, we are delighted to announce that Pannier Tank, no. 7714, a member of the same class of locomotive as 5775, will be joining us for our 50th Anniversary Gala courtesy of our friends at the Severn Valley Railway and the SVR Pannier Tank Fund. 7714 will join us for the later part of our 8 Day Event, 24th June - 1st July.
5775 was built at Swindon by the Great Western Railway in 1929 whereas 7714 was built for the GWR by Kerr Stuart & Co. of Stoke, in 1930 and entered service in Birmingham at the Tyseley shed, now the home of Tyseley Locomotive Works, the same year. Throughout its working life it worked at various sheds until withdrawn by British Railways in January 1959 and sold to the National Coal Board for use at their Penallta Colliery near Rhymney in South Wales.
On withdrawal by the NCB, 7714 was purchased by the SVR and after a lengthy restoration was returned to service in 1992. Since then it has had subsequent overhauls with the latest completed in November 2016.

Locomotive Roster for Weekend 14th & 15th April and Mid-week 18th April 2018by news@kwvr |
USATC S160 2-8-0 5820 is back this weekend at the head of the steam service on Saturday and Sunday. Daily running over the Easter period has now come to an end so we see the return of our midweek diesel railcar service on Wednesday.
First train departs Oxenhope (diesel railcar) at 09.00 with 5820 operating from 11.00 and on Sunday, the first passenger service is steam hauled at 10.15, 5820 working a two train service with the diesel railcar.
With Spring now upon us (in theory at least) the railbus has been retired to Haworth Shed and the diesel service will be in the capable hands of our Class 101 diesel multiple unit which will also be on duty on the Wednesday railcar service. Seen as a "modern" form of rail travel, this class of diesel unit was itself introduced over 60 years ago.
Nunlow's Nightcap
This Saturday sees the last day in service before overhaul of the Bahamas Locomotive Society's, Hudswell Clark 0-6-0T no. 1704 'Nunlow'. Starting at 16.10 from Oxenhope, 'Nunlow will be operating 3 round trips the full length of the branch before retiring to the BLS Loco Works at Ingrow West.
A special ale, Nunlow's Nightcap', has been brewed by Bridgehouse Brewery to mark the occasion and there will be live music from the popular cover band, 'Wired', between 18.20 and 19.00 on Platform 4 at Keighley. For all the information visit the Nunlow's Nighcap page of the website.
Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.
Photographers visiting the Railway to capture Nunlow's last stand, will also have the bonus of 5820 operating the 'Haworth 'Haddock'.

Progress is now moving on well on
Ivatt tank 41241
The boiler is reunited with frames an running gear

Work on L&Y 957 has now moved to about the
mid point
Almost completely stripped down and clearances
returned to what they should be.
Left hand slide bars away for redressing and will
soon be refitted
Piano wires set down the bores to ensure when
we refit the slide bars they are central
The big ends and eccentric sheaves machined
to take up excessive clearances.
The next big operation before rebuilding the bottom

Bradford my old city
Bradford was known as Worstedopolis when I was
a lad and you can see here the drear sight our city
presented. Her looking across Listers Manningham
Mills atop the hill. I am guessing the picture was
taken from the Wapping Rd area looking down
to Bolton Rd and across Canal Rd Power station
Here the goods yard next to exchange station
Old Bradford Railways
When Bradford ruled the textile world
Almost hourly trains to and from London
The ground and track plan of the station I knew
well, Bradford Exchange
During transition in the late sixties from steam
to diesel
Very much turn of the last century as a GNR loco
awaits to leave with its train for the Alps. The GNR
engine men used to refer to the Queensbury lines
as going over the Alps, due to the steepness of
grades up to Queensbury and of course the
long drag out of Keighley to Cullingworth.

The diesel services on Saturday and Sunday will be handled by our Class 101 diesel multiple unit, with the diesel railbus retired to the comparative warmth of Haworth Shed.
