Owned by Jeremy Hosking, Nunney Castle prepares
to depart Pickering with a train for Whitby
Very much admired by the LMS after a trial on the
east coat main line with Launceston Castle and were
so successful that the LMS asked the GWR to build
some of the class for them or at least loan them the
drawings. The request was turned down by the GWR
board and so the LMS had to go another way in
procuring William Stanier from the GWR
Stanier brought with him many other attributes of
the GWR when he moved to Crewe
So successful was the Castles' design that
construction continued at intervals until
1950, by which time 171 had been built.
