GWR Mogul of the West Somerset Railway. The locomotive that never was

The West Somerset railways came to the conclusion
that a mogul would be a good acquisition. Sadly there
were none about available for restoration

So the West Somerset lighted on the idea of converting
a large Prairie, which was essentially the same as the design
for a small boilered mogul designed in the 1930's which was
a mogul with side tanks. So this loco is a result of a radical
rebuild of a former ex-GWR Large Prairie (no 5193) and
is designed around the GWR proposed Small Mogul design.
The loco carries the number 9351 - which follows GWR
practice for the first of a new class. The conversion created
considerable debate amongst the worldwide railway
 community.

Although the particular breed of "Mogul” was never made
metal by the Great Western the design and idea was prepared
during the 1930’s as thoughts turned towards the replacement
for the "Dean Goods” 0-6-0’s, the oldest of which were then
reaching the half-century mark. Although the eventual
decision was made to construct the "2251” class of 0-6-0
(turntable lengths may have come into the reckoning)
9351 has shown how useful these smaller 2-6-0’s
could have been for the traffic department.

It was large prairie No 5193

The result looks superb and performs equally well.
Now bearing the number 9351 as was normal
practice for the GWR's first builds of new design

You can of course build your own. Reeves do drawings
and castings for a 7.25 inch gauge model

Many thanks to
for information on this locomotive
