Midland Railway 158A by Mathew Kirtley

158A was built in 1866 to a design by Matthew Kirtley for express passenger workings to Kings Cross, then the London Terminus of the Midland Railway. 158A has been rebuilt at various dates and finally ended her days  at Nottingham in 1947 as station pilot after 81 years service.

The museum is named after Mathew Kirtley

It must have been pretty cold and wet on winter
express trains

Not much cover for the footplate crew

But doubtless a leap forwards in speed for the
passengers

  1. Kirtley's 0-6-0 goods and 2-4-0 passenger locomotives were of simple design, yet effective and elegant.
