If we had a time machine. Lynton and Barnstaple Railway

A railway forum I have recently started contributing
to posed the question. If you could travel back in time, what service would you like to travel on?

My answer was the Atlantic Coast Express some
time called the Devon Belle for the Illfracombe
bit. I would have added a second and it would
have been the Lynton and Barnstaple. Above we
see Barnstaple Town station with the narrow
gauge L&B, the standard gauge Southern Railway
line lies on the right of the picture almost out of
view. It has crossed the river estuary on what
always seemed to be a very slender trestle type
bridge before continuing to Illfracombe.
Passengers for Lynton and Lynmouth
would transfer here to the narrow gauge
Lynton and Barnstaple Railway

Roughly the same view but in the 1930's

See what I mean about the slender trestle

The Southern standard gauge side of Barnstaple
Town station shortly after closure

Good discussion point and can be found at
