GWR Class 56XX 5643 headed the 1940's celebrations

Embsay and Bolton abbey Railway reminding us
of those often dark but surprisingly enlightening
wartime days

An excellent engine as it would have been very
much involved in getting supplies away from the
South Wales docks of Cardiff, Barry and Swansea,
through which a great deal of supplies from the
USA flowed into the Island Fortress.

A real feel of those days was made by the re creators
who dressed the part

We tend to forget those who were too old for the
active services who nevertheless played a very important
part in the eventual victory as they kept the business
and manufacturing side going

Here two travelers doubtless part of the great war
industry or indeed keeping the food chain going.
They were probably members of Dad's army too
in the evenings and weekends. The Local Defence
Volunteers as they were known or LVD's. Some
wag rechristened them the Look, Duck and Vanish
brigade
