Lancashire and Yorkshire class 25 No 957

The star of the Railway Children is of course an L&Y class 25 0-6-0 goods loco

Designed by Aspinal, they were known as 'Iron Clads' as they appeared a few years after the navy built their first iron clad battle ships. 957 was built at Beyer Peacocks in Manchester in 1887, though a number were also built at the Vulcan foundry in Newton le Willows. It lasted with some 25 others into BR days and was retired in 1959. Bought by private owner and is said to be the first so purchased. The engine came to Howarth as long ago as 1965 and was steamed for the first time in 1967.
