Whitby station the new layout. North Yorkshire Moors Railway

As can be seen a second line has been added and
the platform refurbished

The second line now has a run round loop controlled
by a ground frame

Engines can now unhitch and roll forwards to clear
the points for changing, then run round there trains
repeating the operation at the rear of their train

The overall refurbishment of the station to is of
excellent order.

How it used to be. Steam trains had a tortuous back
shunt to change ends

Class 4 76079 at Whitby yesterday

The new track layout at Whitby is excellent, it is
the first time I have seen in myself and all concerned
are to be congratulated on a super job

Now the NYMR trains can run in and the engine
can run round easily. The Steam platform is in
its own right and NYMR trains do not block the
Network Rail platform

Class 4 76079 looked superb and had a heavy load
for the bank holiday trains

Damems station on the Keighley and Worth Valley railway

So reminiscent of a country station halt so under
used but of such value to those who lived nearby.

Last Friday we had a signal woman and very lovely
too. Very good indeed to see young people and
 especially women becoming involved with
the railway

We are all people first and men and women second

Superbly preserved the signal box controls both
crossing and the passing loop

The compact but serviceable waiting room

It would be shelter from the winter
cold and winds and of course summer
showers too

I little station masters office cum ticket

Living history and of course for we who
remember such a little nostalgia.

Go along and take a look yourself.

The detail

Needless to say it gleams

L & Y No.1 Directors saloon

Great Western 5600 5643 in charge

  • This carriage was built in 1906 for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway's Directors, to allow them to travel parts of the system in very comfortable surroundings to allow them to inspect the route.

  • It was rebuilt by both the LMS and BR, but has been restored by Stephen Middleton to its original condition. Some splendid views can be had though the large windows of the line's scenery and of the locomotive pulling the train.

  • For 2014, this carriage will be attached to most normal service trains on operating days, allowing passengers to experience the luxury and views it affords.

  • It has also visited the NRM at York where it has been a popular exhibit, and also featured in the Stage Production of 'The Railway Children' as the Old Gentleman's Coach.

So take a luxury ride

New Low Moor

Contractors are now on site with a completion
date of next year

Old Low Moor Station

This and the next view down are from the west
end of the station, the Halifax end

Here again the West end of Low Moor

So all of these will be looking towards Bradford

Low Moor in the past

Here a Bradford bound train passes Low Moor

And going the other way a Halifax bound train

It was always a pull up from Exchange Station and
through Bowling tunnel to Low Moor.

Low Moor station and coaling plant.

Low Moor is very much in the news at the moment
as contractors have now moved onto the derelict site
of the old station to build the new Low Moor Station

The old station was a very large and complex
site as it also included the large MPD

So rather more simple, the new Low Moor Station
arises like a phoenix from the ashes or may be the
old ash plant.

below is an artists impression of the new station

USA S100 tank good news.

USA Tank 30072 for 50th Anniversary Special?

by news@kwvr
The railway has well documented over the last few months, the restoration to working order of one of the locomotives at the head of the Re-opening Special in 1968, Ivatt 2-6-2T 41241 and a Boiler Tube appeal is currently open to help achieve this goal. However, many will be wondering, "What of 72?", the second locomotive on that momentous day?
Since last in traffic, the Railway's requirements have changed so much, it was very difficult for the Railway to prioritise the overhaul of the locomotive over other more operationally flexible options. In the first twenty or so years of operation, the Worth Valley Railway used much smaller locomotives on many of its services than is the case today.   Trains were usually composed of compartment stock rather than corridor coaches and did not always include the heavy buffet cars of today. Indeed a very high degree of enginemanship was required to manage five coach trains with the smaller locomotives.
We are delighted to announce, however, that possibly we may be able to realise the long held ambition of seeing both locomotives double head the 50th Anniversary Special in 2018.
As many will know, 72, BR number 30072, is not owned by the railway but by Richard Greenwood, co-owner of 34092 'City of Wells'. With little prospect of seeing 72 steam again, Richard is selling the locomotive to Andy Booth, owner of a number of locomotives, including the Lancashire & Yorkshire  'A' Class 0-6-0 no. 1300. Once restored, 72 will be one of the pool of locos Andy hires out to preserved railways.
Initially the locomotive is moving to the Ribble Steam Railway at Preston and in turn to the Buckley Wells depot on the East Lancashire Railway at Bury for restoration to working condition. It is hoped to complete the overhaul in time for 72 to double-head the KWVR 50th anniversary train with 41241 in 2018. Part of the overhaul may include changes to the boiler tube layout to enhance its steaming capacity.
72 is due to leave the Railway this week, and, although sad to see her leave, we are delighted at the prospect that Andy could well bring steam pressure back to the cylinders in time for that great celebration in 2018.
