Holden's 2-4-0's
Often employed on the fast trains to Harwich and of course the Yarmouth holiday traffic
Before my time though. They must have been heady days as the speed of travel increased with mind boggling rapidity.
Holden was a Quaker and very concerned for the well being of the workers on the GER. Worker safety and comfort was addressed in an age when this was given low priority. His locos were designed to be much more footplate-crew compatible that most contemporary designs, and very futuristic approach too. In later years the excellent crew protection offered by GER locos and their rooms windowed cabs was greatly appreciated by Scottish crews working bleak, snowy and windswept lines in the far north. My mother's family were Quakers too and I think this has come through in my genes.
